Helen Baumgarden (Ready)

Post by cynda1 on Sun Dec 13, 2015 12:42 am

Core Information

Name: Helen Baumgarden
Nickname/Alias: None
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Birthplace: New Bark Town Johto
Trainer Classification: Undecided (Uninterested)
Character Tracker: TBA

Physical Attributes

Height: 5’4’’
Weight: 116 lbs.
Appearance: For years, Helen’s own appearance has been the love of her life. The only thing she loves more than looking at a mirror is looking at a screen. This passion for looking pretty can be plainly seen through her brown eyes, and the sleekness of her red hair is something to really notice. Of course, there is always a possibility that people will notice that she almost puts too much effort in her appearance. At least, that’s how it used to be.

Obviously as a Trainer, she can’t afford to be too obsessed with her appearance, so here’s how it stands. Helen’s eyes are a dark shade of brown that causes her to think of chocolate whenever she looks at them in a mirror or something. For that reason, they usually make her feel hungry so she generally avoids looking at them, as pretty as she thinks they are. Her hair is cut short and shaded in a light red, closer to pink than red.

Her skin is a pale white color, and is clearly sensitive to the sun, and has to get completely drenched in sunscreen multiple times a day whenever she’s out on the beach or whatever. Hats are her best friends when it comes to sunny places, and will simply not leave the house in the sunniest days of summer without one. Her eyes are rather sensitive to light, and it gives her massive headaches, so another friend of hers is a good looking pair of sunglasses.

Helen is more of a winter girl, and actually prefers thick, fluffy coats over the usually popular flat coats that make girls look thinner. That being said, she usually finds happy mediums. It’s rare that you ever see her in a giant coat that makes her look huge, because she usually find slim, cozy coats that fits her just fine during the colder times. Again, hats are her best friends in this extreme of weathers, but perhaps an even better friend is a scarf. Never does she leave during the cold times without a nice looking, soft scarf. According to Helen, that would be a sin.

Of course, you could imagine where the mediums would meet for spring and fall. Because of their generally mild weather, Helen generally takes the time to be very creative with her outfits. Of course, there still is a difference between the two, spring still generally warmer clothes, and fall rather warmer. However, they were just mild enough for the occasional switch. Think of them as younger versions of summer and winter, if that makes any sense.

Nothing is consistent with Helen’s sense of fashion. The only rule in her book is that she could never be seen in the same outfit twice, and that it had to look good. She never has a specific style, and is instead only driven by her instinct, even if the outfit isn’t appropriate for said event.

Defining Traits: Her sense of style is the only thing that could ever really get anyone’s attention. Other than that, nothing all that special. She would completely blend into the crowd if she was wearing casual or plain clothing.

Personality

Personality: The first thing that you would notice about Helen Baumgarden is her love for fashion, and her lack of ambition for literally anything else. However, if you love Pokémon, and if you’re reading this you probably do, then one of the topics that you may try to bring up to her is the latest Pokémon you may have caught in the past week or so. Unfortunately, I would advise against that because she hates Pokémon bitterly, and actively tries to avoid the topic at all costs. This is the trait that sticks out in Helen’s personality the most, and is most likely the core reason that people often get offended by her harsh opinion of.

However, if you decide to walk out of the conversation the moment you hear her opinion on all Pokémon, then the first thing you’ll miss is that she doesn’t care. Helen lacks a drive to pursue a social life, and is in fact, eager to get any obstacle from her mirror or screen, and would much rather chase you out than be friends with you. Perhaps she is all in bad taste for you anyway. After all, she is quite a bit on the selfish and entitled side.

Though she clearly only grew up in a middle class life-style, her parents still managed to spoil this girl rotten. Anything Helen wants, Helen is going to get if she has to scare people into giving it to her. However, she has a major moral conscience, and is unwilling to stoop to horrible levels even if it means having to give up what she wants. She has a courageous sense of justice, and will defend it with confidence.

That being said, her sense of justice and good isn’t necessarily everyone else’s. If Helen feels something, she’ll make it clear, and there is always a possibility that she will shamelessly hurt someone else’s feelings. However, she is bolder to those who are more outgoing. Obviously she still minds others as long as they remain on her good side.

As a trainer, Helen is extremely arrogant, but lacks any kind of experience. She isn’t cruel to her Pokémon, but she makes it very clear that she doesn’t like them. However, despite her distaste, it is always possible for her own Pokémon to make her feel bad for saying anything that would harm them emotionally, and will only apologize to her own Pokémon. Helen is somewhat reasonable, willing to at least try to get along with foes, or new Pokémon to her team in order to get a job done.

That being said, despite the fact that she generally finishes anything she starts, even if it’s something that she was forced to do, Helen is incredibly lazy. She lacks any motivation what so ever aside from fashion and other things she likes. This has been rather irking during her childhood, so she has developed the skill of working through problems even though she isn’t quite interested in them. That being said, she never does anything she dislikes without a complaint or two. Usually ten or twelve complaints, though, depending on the task.

Helen hates some Pokémon more than others, but seems to appreciate those that may have a good sense of fashion, and has a weakness for anything cute. For some reason, sad, cute faces just glue to her head, and she can’t help but want to cuddle them or feel sorry for them. However, Helen still hates them enough not to do so. She clearly isn’t the best Trainer around, especially with all of her bad traits being in the forefront, but if one was to get to know her long enough, they would be able to tell that she really does mean well.

So, in conclusion, Helen is full of complexities and contradictions, and clearly has a lack of any kind of skills aside from fashion. Just being thrown out there in the Pokémon world may not be the best parenting on her father’s part, but in the end she did have this coming to her. She doesn’t start anything she won’t finish, but she is lazy so she doesn’t start a ton of things unless being forced to. Helen isn’t the type of person that really gets along with a lot of people, but that is by no means anyone else’s fault but her own. She takes no initiatives to make friends, and even when she has the opportunity, she doesn’t feel like it’s worth her time. In other words, she usually feels as though she is a class over everyone else despite only being a middle class citizen.

Battle Style: At this point, Helen is a rather naïve battler. Years of avoiding any sort of information about Pokémon is really starting to nip her in the butt now that she has to be a Trainer by her father putting his foot down. On top of that, she lacks the motivation until her pride is wounded. For these reasons, it is hard to tell what her battling style is, if she even has one yet. However, there may be a clue. Helen basically trusts her gut, because she doesn’t have anything else to go on. At this point, her opponent would have to be very bad, or she would have to be very lucky in order to win a battle. However, perhaps a loss of a battle would be the best thing that ever happened to her.

Background

History: Helen was born 16 years ago from March 10th, and was born in the rather peaceful and safe New Bark Town in Johto. She has always been the only child in the Baumgarden household, and she always let them know that. Regardless of whether they noticed or not, the Baumgarden parents made sure to do everything in their power to let their little girl know that they loved her more than anything else in the entire world.

Well, their first problem as parents didn’t take long to appear. They both agreed to do the exact opposite thing their parents did for them, but they were both raised completely differently. She was raised in the height of pristine indulgence while he lived in an environment where his parents built him into a hard worker. In other words, she was spoiled, and he was overworked by his parents. So, obviously, he wanted to spoil his children, to give them the childhood he never had, and she wanted to have them work so that they could become something she never could be in her privileged childhood.

However, obviously, one could handle the trial of parenthood, and eventually Daniel’s plan became dominate over Erica’s. She was a tad bit disappointed at first, but she coped with it fairly easily. After all, Helen did seem to like her daddy’s way of child rearing better than Erica’s anyway. Of course, this extreme bore problems that both parents, especially her father at the beginning, were rather oblivious to. Helen was never told the word no regardless of what she had asked for from the time she was born, to when she turned five. They would both give in and hand her what she wanted, or they would distract her with something else. According to Helen, the word no didn’t exist.

None the less, the family was closer to each other than glue. Nothing separated this trio except Daniel’s work. Ironically enough, even though her father’s plan was used on Helen, Erica was home most of the time, and thus she was closest with her mother.

At least, for a while. You see, her mother had been eager at the beginning, but she was never taught long suffering. She was willing to be there for a while, and cared for their daughter, giving her everything she needed, but she also gave her whatever she wanted or distract her just to shut her up. Eventually, she couldn’t take being constantly stuck living at home, even though she no longer had the tough job of chasing around a toddler, or changing diapers when Helen turned eight, Erica still felt a tactless life. She knew that if she continued the life that she lived, she would never reach the greatness that she really wanted.

She had felt like that for a week before she made possibly the brashest, and possibly most selfish decision that she could possibly make: Erica Baumgarden restarted her career as a Pokémon Coordinator. Originally, Erica had been a Coordinator when she was twelve, but quit two years later when she wanted to pursue boys instead of Pokémon. Now that she was married, Erica was more interested in her need for traveling, or having fun, instead of raising the Baumgarden’s only child.

This was not the reason why it was such a selfish thing for her to do. On the contrary, if she had been open about her longing to be a Top Coordinator, then perhaps Daniel and Erica as a couple could have worked something out. Even if she was no longer willing to parent Helen, and felt that she had no responsibility to have any ties to Helen at all, at least the father and daughter could have coped with it better than they did. However, responsible is not the way of Erica Baumgarden. Instead of being willing to be honest with her family, Erica simply left a note, and left the house, never coming back for months upon months at a time.

She did come back in some occasions, of course. It did occur to her that she loved her husband and daughter, so she didn’t want them to be left without her forever. However, she only returned for relevant holidays, and she came less and less the more time went on. Her first Pokémon was a rather shy Torchic, what with Erica originally being from the Hoenn region, and moved to Johto along with her husband, originally from Kanto, when they both felt that they needed a rather simple and calm place to raise a family. Johto just seemed safe when they started off.

Regardless, Erica’s decision really affected Helen more than anyone else, and this was not in a good way. Helen Baumgarden had been dealt, for the first time, with a situation where she had no control over her mother’s action, and it truly changed her. It was bound to happen with her spoiling, but at least she had some kind of hope for happiness before that rash and selfish decision was made. Helen was strictly dependent on her parents, as they were her only friends, but that all changed when this decision was made. Every time her mother visited, she grew rather distant, and did little to try and kindle a stronger relationship.

Helen’s reaction to everything else changed as well. She became bitter to everyone and refused to truly be friends with anyone aside from herself. The only slight exception to this was her father, who took on the parenting role with great drive and determination. Despite meeting up with his wife on multiple occasions, never once did Daniel Baumgarden complain about his wife’s selfishness. Not to Erica’s face, or even behind her back. Daniel may have been a stubborn man who was only willing to settle with his way or the highway, but he was also a man of character, and he knew when things were out of his control.

For Helen, though, even her father’s dedication wasn’t enough to get his daughter out of a bitter hole and into a future that he foresaw for her. And, of course, his parenting methods didn’t really do anything to help. Helen continued to be spoiled by her father as he toiled hand and foot to keep her happy. The only interests she seemed to have lied behind a screen (honestly, what child isn’t obsessed with electronics these days), and her appearance, more the latter than the former.

Her love for fashion is not a rather lavished or dramatic story as Helen might tell her friends it was, as it just grew from her love of playing with dolls. However, it is, none the less, still an extremely vital point in Helen’s history that should be pointed out, especially at this moment. From this crucial time where Helen was almost mourning the mother she once knew, to the present day, Helen has obsessed over clothing and appearance to no end, and has found it her only comfort in this stressful event.

Something she found that greatly relieved her of her stress was a newfound hatred for Pokémon. No one truly knows for sure why Helen hates Pokémon, not even the teen herself, as it would make a lot more sense to be bitter toward her mother who made the choice, rather than Pokémon, who had no control, much like Helen herself. Helen even knew that her mother leaving had very little to do with her hatred for Pokémon of all kinds, but every time she was asked by her father why, he was always answered with an “All I know, is that it has nothing to do with Mom.” The fact that she couldn’t come up with an answer did little to console the man into thinking that his daughter was alright.

Nothing in Daniel’s fantasy ever foresaw his daughter in a fit of misery, or his wife abandoning them the way they did. If this is how he had envisioned things turning out, the man never would have ever allowed Helen to be brought up the way he had. It took his stubborn mind a full sixteen years for him to finally realize the truly foolish thought that over indulging his child would ever bring up a human being of character. Being able to bring up decent character out of Helen of any kind was impossible when she turned sixteen. Realistically, Daniel knew there was nothing he could do for her now that would truly benefit her, so he really needed to help her see that life, in reality, was not the easy road that Helen had known for all her life.

That is why he did what he is doing now. He decided that in order for Helen to truly thrive in life, he needed to give her what she needed rather than what she wanted. Helen’s sweet sixteenth wasn’t so sweet according to her. On the contrary, it was rather bitter. First of all, she only got one present that year simply because her father said that this present was just too expensive for him to get anything else for her. Remember, he was a middle class citizen, and was not rich in the least. What really made her made, though, wasn’t the amount of presents she received, but what the present was. As Helen opened up the lid of the rather fitting colored paper and ribbon colored lid, something moved in the box just enough to show the top part of a Pokémon, something she had dreaded for half of her whole life.

Of course, she dreaded it, begged her father to return it, but Daniel insisted that it was time for Helen to make it out on her own. He insisted that kids that were her age have long found their gifts and talents in regard to Pokémon and that she was way behind. He had suggested that since she liked clothing so much that she should try Pokémon Coordinating. “But Daddy!” she whined. “I don’t want to make Pokémon look pretty, I want to look pretty!” That was the nicest thing she said about Pokémon, especially the one she received. None the less, this was one argument that Helen simply couldn’t win. Despite his initial easy parenting earlier, Helen had to know the truths about life, and it all started that very next morning. Daniel knew this was the perfect Pokémon for her, and that she would learn a lot from it despite her apparent dislike of the situation.

Defining Moments:
Helen’s Birth: Helen was born to a well-meaning couple, who were both eager to show that they had to potential to be the best parents they could be.

Building up a Spoiled Brat: Unfortunately the Baumgarden way of parenting involved being anything their parents weren’t. Daniel and Erica Baumgarden were raised in two different extremes, and both tried to revere from either one, at first. However, when things got too hard, Erica bailed.

Erica Started her Journey: Though the specifics on why Helen hates Pokémon so much is still unclear, there is a decent amount of evidence that it clearly has something to do with her self-centered, irresponsible mother taking off and going on a journey without so much as a consideration for her family. Still, her mother has always been that way, and honestly it would make more sense to blame her. Not every Pokémon ever. So, the reason behind her hatred, though connected to this somewhat, lies elsewhere.

Father takes full parental responsibilities for Helen: Because of his wife’s decision, Daniel Baumgarden was thrown the responsibility of their daughter. They had discussed this many times before, and he never agreed with her decision to basically abandon her child to him just so she can be the Trainer she wanted to be, but he didn’t really seem to have a choice in the matter. One morning she just upped and left, only leaving a note. Their marriage has never been the same since then.

Father becomes concerned about Helen’s behavior: Daniel noticed more and more Helen’s regressing behavior, and was now starting to believe that she had a serious problem.

Helen starts her Journey after receiving a Pokémon for a Present: In the same out of nowhere fashion as when her mother left, on Helen’s sweet sixteenth, Helen was handed a present, which turned out to be a Pokémon, and was told that she had a week to prepare for her journey.

Pokémon

Pokéball
Pokémon: Minccino
Nickname: Bambi
Gender: Female
Personality: Clean, clever, and maybe a tad-bit obsessive over the small details. She's highly sociable and charming even toward strangers, but also quick to take personal offense toward negative statements thrown her way, even if meant as a joke. She enjoys dusting and tidying while not aggressive in the slightest due to finding distaste in the rough around the edges nature of battling. That being said, she's clever enough to hold her own and maintain appearances while she does so, if it comes down to it.

Original Trainer: Helen Baumgarden
Ability: Cute Charm
Level: 5
Moveset: Pound, Baby-Doll Eyes, Aqua Tail [EM]
Happiness: 0
Exp: 0

A spoiled girl with a good heart tainted by bitterness and resentment, with confusion and apathy on the roads she might walk... A passion for fashion and attachment for the synthetic over the living. Helen won't appreciate any of the Pokemon offered to her, but maybe one of them will have a shot at changing her for the better and forging sentiment with time?

I'm sorry, I thought I gave a good enough hint. This app took me several days to make, and I thought I put down cute and fluffy in her personalities as a hint because she has a soft spot for them. Can I have a re-roll? If not, I'll pick from one of the starters.

Spoiler:

An adorable Pokemon that's almost loyal to a fault. Even only small ounces of affection can keep a Growlithe rearing to please, no matter the Trainer. Maybe, with time, it could even teach Helen of unconditional love.

Helen isn't the only one who's concerned about appearances. She wouldn't need to worry about this Pokemon appearing scruffy or dirty... or even if anything around her would be dirty for long!

A cute native of the Johto Region, Teddiursa is like a doll. Beyond that, it would also most likely share Helen's courage in the face of danger and work its hardest with a fierce intensity.

Often peppy and optimistic, it may be hard for even Hellen to keep a Buneary down. With boundless energy and persistence, there's a lot to offer in such a cute package.

Pretty much a ball of fluff... very static-y fluff, but fluff nonetheless. It's hard to deny that Mareep is quite adorable and innocent looking. They're often kindhearted and compassionate Pokemon determinedly trotting through life. It could, perhaps, do so alongside Helen.
cynda1 wrote:I would like a female Minccino, normal or shiny, I don't care. I would like to name her Bambi, and her egg move will be Aqua Tail. Thank you so much!
